Unfortunately, this sad scenario is happening all over the country, with many heartbreaks for both our four-legged friends and their owners. “Since the economy took a turn for the worse, we’ve seen a lot more animal surrenders,” says Tricia Sebes, volunteer and rescue coordinator for the McKamey Animal Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “The reason is definitely increasing that people can’t afford to feed their pets.”

Max, 14, A Krusader with Hart, Helps Maine Kittens with FIV

At the Homeless Animal Rescue Team shelter in Cumberland, Maine, some of the residents very well may live out their nine lives there. This cat-only, no-kill shelter is a haven for kitties with FIV, a disease that usually makes potential adopters shy away from bringing one home. H.A.R.T. has devoted an entire room for these kitties, who have their food issues. Says Max Christian, a 14-year-old volunteer at HART: “The FIV cats don’t eat alot.”

Hello again! This is Mimi Ausland. I am the 13 year old girl who started the two websites freekibble.com and freekibblekat.com to help feed hungry dogs and cats at our local animal shelter. Boy did it take off! Every month we are now feeding 13 shelters across the country. Part of the reason we are able to feed so many hungry dogs and cats is because I was lucky enough to be on t.v. shows including Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. Without them and all our very generous sponsors we would not have been able to generate the 1.8 million nutritious meals to homeless dogs and cats!

Angel Dog Rescue Uses Donation to Save “Dogs in Danger of Not Making It”

There is just about anything that Susan Hayley would do to rescue homeless dogs. This 71-year-old crawls beneath abandoned homes to save the strays and their puppies she discovers living in filth. This founder of Angel Dog Rescue in Georgetown, Georgia, an area with no animal control and no shelter, built a kennel of her own and fosters almost 20 dogs at a time. Says Palena Dorsey, who runs Sanctuary Animal Refuge in Florida: “She is a petite little thing - yet strong as an oak tree in her determination and commitment to rescue and help the dogs in her area.”

Chance Meeting in Supermarket Aisle Leads to 400 Cases of Spot's Stew for NJ Shelter

In late 2008, Cathy DiMatteo was browsing the aisles of Whole Foods in Princeton, New Jersey. An owner of three dogs, she mistakenly picked up a can of Spot’s Stew for cats. “When I placed it back on the shelf, a man standing there with a clip-board said ‘Excuse me, can you tell me why you put that can back?” recalls DiMatteo, who told the man she was looking for Halo dog food. “And the man said, ‘I’ll help you find it.’”
